The Werewolf’s daughter is a Slovakian folktale. The story goes that there was a father who had several daughters. For some reason the story made it known that the youngest was the most beautiful. One by one the father who happened to be a werewolf killed his daughters. The youngest who apparently was also the smartest figured out what her father was doing. She pushed him down and ran. As she did this, she discarded her clothes which allowed her to get far enough ahead to hide in some hay. Her father tore through the hay but got tired before he found the one his daughter was in. To me, this is where the story gets dodgy. The king happened to be hunting in the area and found this woman naked, in the hay. He decided to marry her and she agreed as long as he never let a beggar into the kingdom. He agreed but didn’t live up to his promise. A beggar was let in who just coincidentally turned out to be her werewolf father. He then killed her children and framed her for it. Her husband the king instead of asking questions throws her out with dead children’s head tied around her neck. Through some magic the children’s lives are restored and the king immediately forgives his queen and kills the werewolf. This story through and through shows how disposable and inconsequential women were viewed. The poor woman after driven from her home by a blood thirsty father thinks that she has found her prince charming. But instead she has found a king who doesn’t keep his promises and doesn’t ask questions when his children are killed. Instead he thinks the worst of her and casts her out. The father, the werewolf, decided one day that he just didn’t want to deal with his daughters. Would no one know they were missing? The story makes it a clear point that she is the prettiest daughter. But it seems to me she was also the smartest. The other daughters were easily killed by their father. The whole story seems to demean women and cast them aside.
