Surely, all people can recall youth, and the curiosity that may come with these years. “Curiosity killed the cat” could never be so true during these years. However, curiosity is not the only thing that could have caused the harm, for at times it is the deceit of another. The story of Little Red Riding Hood is a tale most children have commonly heard growing up. The idea that children know

what is best for them, is a thought that has crossed all of our minds at that age. More times than one would like to admit, the temporary independence has backfired. This was true for Little Red, whom did not listen to her mother’s better judgement. In the song, “Lil Red Riding Hood” by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, the wolf’s perspective is shared through the lyrics.

The lyrics are directed at Little Red, as they are being spoken from the wolf who is essentially checking her out, as he desires her. He continues to mention things about her appearance. He says, “I don't think little big girls should Go walking in these spooky old woods alone.” The wolf is aware that she is putting herself in danger. In the variations of the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale, she is attacked each time by the wolf. This was caused by her naïve ways as a young girl. As a child, it is hard to see the consequences that come with life choices, especially at an age where you believe the best in everyone. In this song, the wolf is singing that he would be good, as long as he had her by his side. However, he is aware that at glance, she would be frightened. This song portrays the sexual attraction of the wolf to the girl, in which he goes to many extremes to get this young girl at a vulnerable state. This story is used to instill a fear, or caution, towards the unknown, hoping to teach children that being naïve can put you in danger. It is ironic that the wolf is used to be the predator, for this creates the stigma that wolves are always the “bad guys.” Looking back and connecting with course content, not often are the werewolves the heroes of the story.
