Variation: Buo, Kuntilanak, MATI-ANAK, Pontipinnak
Indonesian and Malayan vampiric demon that is created when she dies in childbirth, as a virgin, or as the victim of a pontianak attack.
To prevent this glass beads must be placed in the corpse’s mouth, an egg in each armpit, and needles driven into the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
"A pontianak can pass as a human woman except for a hole in the back of its neck and smelling exactly like the tropically sweet frangipani flower. It will also announce its presence with a call that sounds like a crying baby."
It lives in a banana tree and shape-shifts into a bird to hunt at night. Strangely if one can get a hair from this vampire it serves as a talisman against that particular vampire.
"The Pontiannak is native to Malaysia, and has a special relationship with another vampire type, the Langsoir.
A Langsoir is created when a women dies in childbirth; if the child is also stillborn, the result is a Pontiannak. These are vampire children, like the Ustrel, but the Pontianak have the ability to transform into screech owls and begin hunting human prey immediately."[1]
