Let the Right One In

Oskar is a fair-faced, meek, quiet, and lonely little boy.  He is often overlooked and forgotten.  His mother seems to love him, but is rather preoccupied.  His father is not very present in the twelve year, nine month, and eight day old boy’s life.  He keeps to himself most of the time and dreams of standing up for himself against his oppressors.  A group of boys at school, led by the nasty Conny, pick and prod at him.  They will not let an opportunity pass to tease and tear him down.  Their actions are heartless and torturous.

Tomas Alfredson encapsulates the plight of the outsider with Oskar’s life.  He does not feel he belongs or has much of a purpose in life, until Eli comes along. When Eli comes along, everything starts to change.  This little girl intrigues Oskar even though she is quite elusive and cold.  He feels a connection with her and relates to her on a basic connective level.

Tomas Alfredson said that he felt a great deal of social realism and fantasy when first reading the novel that later became the film.  He sought to create a horror film with the idea of the silent social outcry from the outcast.  He perfectly captures this in Oskar’s naivety, intrigue, and innocence.
