Black Vampires

In modern media, representations of black vampires have become more prevalent, reflecting a broader shift towards diversity and inclusion in storytelling. These portrayals often challenge traditional stereotypes and offer more nuanced depictions of black characters within the vampire genre. Here are a few examples:

  • "Blade" Franchise (1998-2004): Perhaps one of the most iconic black vampire characters in modern media is Blade, portrayed by Wesley Snipes. Blade is a half-human, half-vampire hybrid known as a "Daywalker" who hunts vampires while grappling with his own identity. The franchise includes three films ("Blade," "Blade II," and "Blade: Trinity") and a television series.
  • "Blacula" (1972) and "Scream Blacula Scream" (1973): Although not…

Are there negatives to being a vampire?

Vampires have been around since the dawn of folklore. We know what they need to survive, but are there truly benefits to being a vampire, or are they all cons?

What do we know about being vampires?

They need to consume blood, can fly in some cases, are inhumanly strong and fast, can recover from severe injuries, and never grow old. But what are the drawbacks to this?

RULE UPDATE

No analysis articles, even on your blog. This is an information source, and I will not end up with the same problems as when I first adopted this wiki.

For context: After I first adopted this wiki and started cleaning it up, I found out from a user that a bunch of analysis articles were posted by students of possibly the most irresponsible teacher I have ever heard of, who thought assigning their students to vandalise a wiki with their homework assignments was a good idea. As a result, I got hundreds of articles talking about the same thing, a vandalised homepage, and for some reason a ton of people wanted to talk about Little Red Riding Hood (I even banned articles about little red on the wiki as a result of this)

This, of course, was EXTRE…

Welcome to Vampedia

Welcome to the wiki, I'm PyroGothNerd, I adopted this wiki sometime last year. If you've been gone a while, you may have noticed the homepage, cursor, and background are different.

Rules must be read. They are subject to change as needed

We have a Discord and a Tumblr:

Before I adopted the wiki, some teacher had people post their assignments on this wiki as articles (because encouraging your students to commit online vandalism is something every teacher should strive for, apparentally)...that was a nightmare, they only got away with it because the previous admins were inactive. I think I got all of them, but please let me know if you see any suspicious articles, such as werewolf articles, anything regarding Red Riding Hood, anything analyzing …

MEMO

  • Remember to go through the "Clean up" category on Saturday and remove red links from the current articles.
  • Once wiki is adopted, go through candidates for deletion and...well...delete
  • Again, nce wiki is adopted, make a RULES page. Make sure to lock it so only admins can edit.

The current situation

While I normally hate using wikipedia for articles and prefer to write from scratch, I have little choice for this wiki. There are more articles analyzing vampires and Little Red Riding Hood than there are of actual vampires. Opinion pieces have no place as wikia articles, and should only be done as blog posts or forum discussions. I've got a lot of work cut out for me. I fully plan on editing the articles from wikipedia so they are still unique from the original versions.

Once I finally do adopt the wiki, I will need to set up rules. I will also try to find other admins, preferably users I already know and trust.

Frost and Blade, the others

In the movie blade the theme of othering holds a huge role in this film. Not only with Blade himself but also with the character Frost. Blade being a human vampire hybrid himself is the ultimate other. He hunts vampires because his mother was turned to a vampire (or he believed to have been killed) so he hunts them to take revenge and help humans. Even toward middle of the film (which can be found here: https://arizona.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=54741b31-211b-422a-933c-8a5da8bb7ea3) Frost tells Blade that humans would never accept a half-breed like him. For the reason that he is an animal of sorts, an outsider to the outsiders. Frost on the other hand is also made to feel like an outsider, which is why he wants to beco…

Night Watch Themes

In the film Night Watch there are themes such as othering and scapegoating present within the story. To make itclear, othering is the act of categorizing a person or group as not “one of us” or different than oneself.

In the beginning of the film they introduce the Others. The Others are beings that have supernatural powers. They are already othered from human beings for they have special abilities, but they take it one step further in the film and “other” them even more. The Others  are divided into two groups: Light vs Dark . The Others are the same up until they choose which side they want to be allied, and through this there is the theme of othering. Even though Others are all the same each side sees one another as different or “other”.This…

Vampire Ltd.

Vampire Ltd.

The story of Vampire Ltd. relates how we can relate the vampire theme to certain items like vehicles, and how the power of imagination can create a fast metallic monster waiting to consume your blood per mile.

Throughout the years we have seen several films, and novels that provide life to cars like Christine, dolls like chucky, and even human parts like the hand on the Adams. On the story Vampire Ltd. The narrator explains his trip to England, and how he was able to drive one of the most exclusive vehicles at the time. The story begins by him taking the plane where he judges the unfortunate event of a man that drops his vegetables on the escalator. This opens a conversation between them once they are in the plane, since both of…

Vampires, Sexuality, and the Media

The Girl with the Hungry Eyes ” may seem like just another clever take on the old vampire legend; however, it is also a commentary on the affects of media on society. The Girl, as she is called, feeds on the life forces of men in much the same way that a classic vampire, with a small twist: she consumes their being. The Girl is presented as someone with an irresistible pull, an appeal that goes deeper than just sex. The narrator describes in great detail the ubiquitous nature of the Girl: “I…can’t stand to go downtown and see the mob slavering up at her on the tower…hate to look at magazines anymore…don’t like to think of millions of Americans drinking in that poisonous half smile…”. While he may claim that he hasn’t “suddenly developed any…

Dracula's Daughter

In the film Dracula’s Daughter, the Countess Marya Zaleska finds herself not wanting to be a vampire due to the death of her father. She does not have the urge to thirst for blood. She attempts for free herself of the disease but is unable to do so. In order to help herself, she seeks the attention of a psychiatrist, Dr. Garth for help. This reminds me of the situation of the main character Tony in the film, I Was a Teenage Werewolf. Both characters seek help from someone who is certified to do so, but unfortunately for both, things go awry. The Countess has the urge to make Dr. Garth one of the undead as well. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned for her and she ends up dead, in a similar circumstance that Tony gets himself into. These…

Night Watch- Anton Gordestky Analysis

Night Watch 2004

Analysis of Anton Gorodestky

Anton Gordestky is a young man who is an “other” that serves for the light. Before he became an other, we was trying to bring back his wife by asking Daria use dark magic. In this process, he agreed to kill an innocent unborn child that he later regrets. 12 years after this incident, he works for Night Watch protecting those from evil. In the beginning of the movie, we see Anton as a lost man who is just going through the motions. He even seemed to be drunk most of the time. One day, Anton felt a “call” from these two vampires who are trying to lure an innocent boy to feed on. When Anton first met the boy, he had an instant connection. Anton fought the two vampires, killing one but the other got …

Blade themes

Blade is an interesting character. He is the epitome of his species by being vampirical but gains his powers through birthright. He is African-American, which is not how most protagonist vampires are portrayed historically. He lives like he is a poor underground street hustler in a warehouse. Yet he has his multiple weapons and bullets made of silver, uses science and tech (ultra-violet light, chemicals), and vehicles for transportation. Meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum there is the counsel, and his nemesis for this movie Frost, who is a part of the white male power structure of the counsel all live opulently and don’t practice their supposed “forgotten faith” (Vampire Bible, Blood God etc..). Apart from Frost, they are old blood…

Blade vampedia entry 3

There are many films that portray vampires and werewolves to human understanding through different contexts’ and how the audience interprets these understandings. In the 1998 film “Blade,” the main character is Eric (a.k.a. Blade) who is half mortal and half-vampire and his main goal is seeking revenge upon his mother’s death and he continues this to try to get rid of all the vampires in the world. On his hunt for vampires he meets a woman named Dr. Karen Jenson who was bitten on the neck by a vampire (Crispy) and when she was laying on the floor he had flashbacks of his mother in the same position and with his feelings he took her and asked Whistler (his long time friend) to help and save her. Blade Character Analysis

Blade is unlike any other vampire in literature or film. There are two major things that set him apart from the rest. The first being that Blade is half vampire and half human. The second being that he kills other vampires. Most vampires can’t be exposed to sunlight, silver, garlic, etc. without dying. However, Blade can withstand all of these things because of his special nature. This gives him all of the vampire’s heightened senses and abilities without any of the setbacks. Though he has an underlying urge to drink blood, he has a serum that he takes to keep this urge at bay. Along with his special abilities, his attitude and mission are also different from most vampires. He does not seek to feed off of humans and kill them, b…

Lemora- 1973

The film, “Lemora” is about a vampire who summons a young beautiful girl named Lila. This movie might seem confusing to most people because the some of the parts of the story are left a mystery. The main question I get out of this whole movie is, was Lemora trying to protect Lila, or corrupt Lila? Lila is a brave, young, beautiful 13-year-old girl who lived with a reverend. Her father was a gangster who killed people, including her mother. People were either jealous of Lila or wanted to seduce her because of her good looks. She could even tell that the reverend thought those things of her. She never got a break, between her dad, the church, or all the jealous people around her. In a way, although never said in the story, I beli…

Delving into The Family of a Vourdalak

Zdenka, the most important female character in the family described in the story "The Family of a Vourdalak", is an interesting character to analyze.  Initially, she does not seem like a person who would fit the description of a vampire willingly wanting to feed on the blood of a human for the sole purpose of pleasure and survival.  After progressing through the story it becomes more clear that she is a vourdalak , specifically by the actions she takes and the way her family acts in accordance with her.  For example, Marquis (narrator) describes Zdenka in a charming way:

I was immediately struck by her resemblance to the Duchesse de Gramont, particularly with respect to one characteristic, a delicate line on her forehead.  To this day, I ha…

The story, “The Girl with the Hungry Eyes,” is about a vampire, referred to as the Girl, who feeds on the attention of vulnerable men. She is utterly aloof, reveals nothing about her past, and uses her mysterious display to draw attention to herself. The Girl is one who lives by preying on others, and exploits and ruins the lives of men.The victim in this story, the photographer, realizes this too late. Throughout Leiber’s short story, the Girl continually subverts her vampiric identity in order to feed on people via the advertisements in which she appears.

I Was a Teenage Werewolf and Bram Stoker's Dracula

Through watching I Was a Teenage Werewolf I recognized some similarities between this film and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The main difference between this film and Bram Stoker’s are that in I Was a Teenage Werewolf the main antagonist is a werewolf, whereas in Dracula the main antagonist is a vampire, who has control over wolves who serve him and bring him his prey when he can’t’ hunt. There are other minor differences as well as many similarities that I’m not going to touch discuss, but rather I will talk on an aspect that fascinated me. What remains the fascinating aspect to me is that in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, after Dr. Van Helsing, Arthur Holmwood, and Quincey Morris trap Lucy in the cemetary and succeed in driving a stake through her heart and cut…

Vampedia 2 Lil' Red Riding Hood by Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs

Lil’ Red Ridin’ Hood by Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs is a song that tells a times old fairy tale but with a more straightforward and explicit meaning than the one we heard as kids. This song is a representation of the inappropriate sexuality of men towards younger women. Also representing the innocence of these young females and how they shouldn’t trust strangers because of the possibility of those strangers being predators. As the fairy tale goes, the song talks about the wolf spotting Little Red Riding Hood walking alone in the woods. The wolf being the singer. Once he spots and approaches her the first few lines of the song are of the wolf convincing her that the woods are dangerous and that she should walk with him. The song continues…

Lil’ Ride Ridin’ Hood by Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh

The 1966 song “Lil’ Red Ridin’ Hood” performed by Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1966 and was the bands second top 10 hit.[1]  The song is based off Charles Perrault’s 1698 fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. The song replaces the figure of the wolf with that of a man. The song takes the fairy tale façade out and replaces it with a sexual undertone. With lyrics such as “you sure are looking good”, “what full lips you have, they’re sure to lure someone”, it’s hard to not see a sexual, even pedophile undertone to the song. The original story has been analyzed and interpreted as being about sexual awakening, female puberty and her sexual maturity.[2] The authors own moral warning states: “…attr…

Surely, all people can recall youth, and the curiosity that may come with these years. “Curiosity killed the cat” could never be so true during these years. However, curiosity is not the only thing that could have caused the harm, for at times it is the deceit of another. The story of Little Red Riding Hood is a tale most children have commonly heard growing up. The idea that children know what is best for them, is a thought that has crossed all of our minds at that age. More times than one would like to admit, the temporary independence has backfired. This was true for Little Red, whom did not listen to her mother’s better judgement. In the song, “Lil Red Riding Hood” by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, the wolf’s perspective is …

The Werewolf's Daughter

The Werewolf’s daughter is a Slovakian folktale. The story goes that there was a father who had several daughters. For some reason the story made it known that the youngest was the most beautiful. One by one the father who happened to be a werewolf killed his daughters. The youngest who apparently was also the smartest figured out what her father was doing. She pushed him down and ran. As she did this, she discarded her clothes which allowed her to get far enough ahead to hide in some hay. Her father tore through the hay but got tired before he found the one his daughter was in. To me, this is where the story gets dodgy. The king happened to be hunting in the area and found this woman naked, in the hay. He decided to marry her and she agre…

“Little Red Hat” and “Little Red Riding Hood” are two folktales that are similar to one another yet are different in their own way. “Little Red Hat” was written in Italy/Austria with no real author of the tale. Meaning that the tale was probably known around the community to entertain and share the moral of the story. “Little Red Riding Hood” is the version of the folktale we are all familiar with. A French author named Charles Perrault wrote “Little Red Riding Hood.” He was also known for writing other folktales such as “Puss in Boots”, “Little Thumb “and “Cinderella.” A big difference between these two stories is the ogre and the werewolf. The story we are most familiar with involves the werewolf and we wouldn’t even think an ogre can pl…

Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood is a fictonial tale, with many versions from around the globe. For example, in Austria the "wolf" is represented by an ogre instead.(Story linked here). The ogre is vicious and cruel and in my own opinion this fictonal story is gruesome and goes into more detail compared to the American version, or even French version. Charles Perrault's version of Little Red Riding Hood (Story linked here) starts off as the little girl red going into the woods to visit her sick grandmother. In the woods she meets a wolf who starts to talk to her and ask her where she is headed. Little Red tells the wolf her plans to visit her grandmother and the location of her home. This allows the wolf to race to the grandmothers house and eat the…

The Evolution of the Hood

What comes to mind when the story The Little Red Riding Hood is mentioned? For many, it’s probably something along the lines of a classic childhood memory, a nightly bedtime story, or a fun read growing up. Although it is a classic today, the story has roots that are far more cynical than the far more modern version. Diving far back, Little Red Riding Hood (Perrault ), was written in 1697 has the same basic tale, without too much gore, as the modern-day version. But as it matured in its history, the story became far more macabre before it evolved further. One example of this is the storyLittle Red Hat (Schneller ), which was written in 1867 and is a far darker take on the same story. The story involves the main characters Little Red …

Lil’ Red Riding Hood by Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs

Sexual predators have been a prominent issue in countries around the world and can be traced back as far as Jack the Ripper’s time period.  Many individuals, especially young ones, suffer horrendous acts made by strangers and are left traumatized because of it. That is why many writers have come up with several ways to parade the message of averting the confrontation of unfamiliar people by having a wolf represent a man’s hidden sexual desires. What we reflect in our fears

Many of us have heard of the classical story of the "Little Red Riding Hood" which consists of a young beautiful girl that decides to bring some goods to her grandmother, but before she leaves the house, she is told by her mother to never talk to strangers. Once she got into the forest, she encountered a wolf that asked her about where she was going, why she had to go visit, along other questions. She broke the promise that she made with her mother and told the wolf her plan. Then the wolf got ahead of the game and ate the girl's grandmother, and pretended to be the grandmother by lying in bed. Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs "Lil' Red Riding Hood"

Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs song “Lil’ Red Riding Hood” is a song that is an adaptation of Charles Perrault’s classic story “Little Red Riding Hood.” This song begins by the main singer imitating a howl which suggests that the song will be from the point of view of a wolf, specifically referencing the antagonistic wolf from Perrault’s story. Throughout the song, the singer makes remarks such as “Hey there Little Red Riding Hood, you sure are looking good. You’re everything a big bad wolf could want” or “What full lips you have. They're sure to lure someone bad” or “What big eyes you have, the kind of eyes that drive wolves mad” which suggests that in this adaptation, the wolf is having intimate thoughts about Little Red Riding Hood (Lyrics…

Vampedia 2

The folk tale “Little Red Hat,” originated in Italy/Austria, and the tale “Little Red Riding Hood” are two stories that have the same moral but tell a very different story. It is interesting how “Little Red Hat” uses an ogre instead of the expected werewolf. In folklore an ogre is defined as a man-eating giant. Many people interpret an ogre in a folktale as being used as a method of instilling good behavior in children by suggesting that bad behavior attracted and excited ogres, who would then eat the perpetrator. Little Red Hat takes a detour in the flower fields before delivering soup to her grandmother. If she had gotten there on time, or before the ogre, she may not have gotten her grandmother or herself killed. Fictional stories give …

Little Red Riding Hood and the associated stories

The story "Little Red Riding Hood " by Charles Perrault is slightly different than most of the versions of the story that is told in the United States of America (see below for photo from American version). Overall, there are many different variations of the story that children across the globe hear as it is one of the most popular fairy tales. These variations include "Little Red Hat " and the version by the Grimm brothers . In the story by Perrault, the story ends with the little girl being eaten by the big bad wolf, who clearly is not trying to show any mercy.
